LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego women’s soccer team has been selected to finish first in the 2019 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women’s soccer preseason coaches poll, as voted on by the conference’s 13 head coaches. The poll results were announced on Tuesday morning.

The Tritons racked up 144 points in the poll, as well as 12 of the 13 first place votes. The remaining first place vote went to Sonoma State, who was picked to finish second with 132 points. Chico State rounded out the top three with 114 points. View the full poll results below.

Past Success

UC San Diego looks to continue its success in the competitive conference during its final year in Division II. The Tritons have finished first in the CCAA during the past three seasons and have won the CCAA Tournament the past four.

Last season, UC San Diego finished the regular season with a 15-2-1 overall record and a 10-2 conference mark. The Tritons earned the top seed heading into the CCAA Tournament and hosted the event at Triton Soccer Stadium.

In the semifinals, the Tritons recorded a commanding 5-0 victory over San Francisco State. The Gators managed just two shots during the contest, while five different Tritons scored goals.

During the finals, Megumi Barber notched a pair of goals in a 3-1 win over Sonoma State, and was later named the Tournament Most Valuable Offensive Player. Teammate Natalie Saddic was named the Tournament Most Valuable Defensive Player.

Coming Up

The Tritons’ season begins on Sept. 5, with conference play starting on Sept. 27. After facing Cal State East Bay and Monterey Bay on the road, UC San Diego will host a seven-game homestand against its conference foes before wrapping up the regular season at Sonoma State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Cal State LA.

UC San Diego will then host the final four teams of the CCAA Tournament at Triton Soccer Stadium from Nov. 15-17.
