Tritions Set to Compete at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersey Invite this Weekend
UCSD turned in a strong performance at the event last year, with four Tritons winning their respective events. Scott Tsuda had a first place finish in the men’s long jump with his mark of 21’2.75”. Laiah Blue picked up a victory in the 400 meter hurdles, breaking the tape in a time of 61.93 seconds. Jillian Sola’s throw of 154’00” in the women’s discus was good enough for the victory. Her winning mark came on the final throw, bettering the second place mark by over nine feet.
12 Tritons have thus far earned either NCAA Provisional or Automatic times this season, as have three of the UCSD relay teams. Laiah Blue will be heading back to nationals this year after notching the top time in the nation in the 100m hurdles at 13.69, an automatic qualifier. Whitney Johnson also has been strong during the year, with the second best mark in the triple jump and the 3rd best mark in the long jump on the season. Diane Dunn, Emily McGregor, Corey Sheredy, Christine Merrill, Linda Rainwater, Madeline Flint, Jillian Sola, Sarah Hendy, and Torrey Trust also have notched NCAA ranked times during the season. On the men’s side, Daniel Anderson holds a time of 1:51.60 in the 800m run, an NCAA Provisional mark and the second best time in that event on the year.
The UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational is open to all Division I teams. The Tritons will compete against many Division I powerhouses, including the host Bruins.
