SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The 14th-ranked University of California San Diego softball team suffered two losses in California Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) play to Cal State San Bernardino, Friday afternoon. The Coyotes came from behind to win the first game 6-5 and topped UC San Diego 4-1 in the second game.
UCSD drops to 4-2 in CCAA play and 9-3 overall. CSUSB moves to 3-1 in the conference and 8-4 on the season.
The Tritons led for the majority of the game before CSUSB used a four-run seventh inning to come from behind and walk-off the 6-5 victory.
The Coyotes’ Jessica Brown his a home run to left center in the fourth inning to make it a 2-1 ball game. CSUSB scored another run of a sacrifice fly to knot the game at two.
Maday used a sacrifice fly into center field to bring home Kendall Baker as UCSD took back the lead, 3-2.
The Tritons extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh after Maday hit a two-run homer to left field.
Infield errors by UCSD ultimately allowed the Coyotes to score four unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh and escape with the win.
Lauren Brown and Milana Casillas split time on the mound for UCSD. Brown pitched six innings and gave up four hits and two earned runs, while earning four strikeouts. Casillas (4-2) came in relief of Brown and was credited with the loss after giving up four unearned runs.
Amanda Ramirez earned the win for CSUSB after pitching a complete game and allowing three earned runs and seven hits.
The game remained tied at one heading into the bottom of the seventh before the Coyotes used a three-run walk-off homerun to hand UCSD its second loss of the day, 4-1.
Both teams combined for only five hits through five innings of play, before the Coyotes’ Caitlyn Olan hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-0 game.
Sophomore Maddy Lewis hit a bomb over the left field fence in the top of the seventh to knot the game, 1-1.
Brown’s walk-off home run brought in three runs as the hosts earned the victory.
Freshman Lizzy Beutter pitched five innings for the Tritons allowing only one hit and one earned. Brown (3-1) came in relief of Beutter for 1.1 innings and earned the loss after giving up three earned runs.
The Coyotes’ Cassandra Williams pitched a complete game and earned the win.
"Overall, I think we played well today," said UCSD head coach Patti Gerckens. "At the end of the day we will learn from this and grow as a team, and I am excited for tomorrow's games."
The Tritons will close out the four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25 starting at noon.
