No. 14 UC San Diego Splits Doubleheader With Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The 14th-ranked University of California San Diego softball team split a doubleheader with Cal State San Bernardino in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, Saturday afternoon. UC San Diego came from behind to win game one, 5-3, before falling 4-3 to the Coyotes in nine innings in the nightcap. CSUSB takes the four-game series after sweeping the doubleheader on Friday.

UCSD moves to 5-3 in CCAA play and 10-4 overall. CSUSB finishes the weekend 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

"I thought we did a good job in game one bouncing back from our two losses yesterday," said head coach Patti Gerckens. "Unfortunately, we let some opportunities pass us by in the second game and our defense hurt us. It's something we will continue to work on and get better."

CSUSB jumped on the board first after Morgan Ratliff homered to right center in the bottom of the third to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.

The Tritons answered in the fourth inning with two runs to knot the game 2-2. Ashley Chestnut hit an RBI double to left field to put UCSD on the board before Kendall Woken scored on an error by the CSUSB short stop.

The Coyotes’ Caitlyn Olan hit a one-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to take back the lead, 3-2.

UCSD used three runs in the fifth inning to ultimately seal the victory. Sophomore Maddy Lewis made it across home plate on an error by the CSUSB pitcher to knot the game at three. Lauren Sanders capped the inning with a two-run bomb over center field.

Senior Milana Casillas and freshman Lizzy Beutter split time in the circle for the Tritons. Casillas pitched four innings and allowed three earned runs and four hits. Beutter came in relief of Casillas and earned her third save of the season after pitching three innings, allowing no hits and collecting three strikeouts.

Cassandra Williams was credited with the loss for CSUSB after pitching 2.2 innings and allowing three runs.

The Coyotes' Briana Quintana hit an RBI single to walk-off the 4-3 victory in nine innings. 

CSUSB led early in the game scoring a run in the first inning and the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.

UCSD answered in the top of the fifth with a big three RBI double to left field from junior Kelsi Maday. The Tritons took a 3-2 lead.

In the sixth inning, the Coyotes tied the game at three after Jessica Brown scored on an error by the UCSD short stop to ultimately force the game into extras.

Lauren Brown pitched four innings for UCSD allowing one earned run. She tallied three strikeouts. Beutter game in relief of Brown and was credited with the loss after spending 4.1 innings on the mound. She allowied one earned run and eight hits.

Amanda Ramirez earned her fourth win of the season for the Coyotes after pitching four innings and striking out two.

UC San Diego will return home to host San Francisco State for a four-game series March 3-4. The doubleheader on Friday, March 3 is slated to start at 1:00 p.m. On Saturday, March 4 SF State and UCSD will play a doubleheader set to start at 11:00 a.m.
