UC San Diego Splits Doubleheader With SF State to Win Series 3-1

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego split its doubleheader against San Francisco State in two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games Saturday at Triton Softball Field. SF State came from behind to win game one, 8-5, before UC San Diego cruised to a 10-4 victory in the series finale.

With the split, UCSD wins the four-game series 3-1, having taken two from SF State on Friday.

The Tritons are now 13-5 on the season and 8-4 in the CCAA, while the Gators stand at 4-12 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

Junior Lauren Sanders finished the day 4-5 with three RBI and a double. Junior outfielder Kelsi Maday provided four hits, five runs and two RBI while swiping one base. Rachel Phillips had five RBI, a double and one sacrifice fly.

GAME ONE
Despite leading 4-2 through the first three innings, UCSD gave up runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to ultimately suffer a three-run loss.

With the bases loaded, Ashley Chestnut drew a walk to score Kendall Baker followed by another walk from Phillips that gave the Tritons a 2-0 lead.

The Gators answered in the top of the second with two runs of their own to knot the game at two.However, UCSD added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead. Sanders hit an RBI single that scored Maddy Lewis before sophomore Caitlyn Weisner singled into right field to bring home another runner. 

A big fourth inning from SF State gave the visitors a 5-4 lead. Madison Collins and Aryn Guzman hit back-to-back doubles followed by an RBI single from Megan Clark.

Kasie Trezona hit a home run that gave the Gators’ a two-run lead in the top of the fifth inning. SF State kept its momentum rolling, scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to go up by four.

UCSD tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh, with Maday scoring on an RBI ground out, however it wasn’t enough as SF State earned its only win of the series.

Sophomore Lauren Brown and senior Milana Casillas split time in the circle for the Tritons. Brown was credited with the loss after giving up five earned runs and five hits. Casillas came in relief of Brown and threw 3.1 innings, allowing three runs and six hits.

The Gators’ Megan Clark threw a complete game and earned the win.

GAME TWO
The Tritons scored seven runs in the fourth inning to break open the lead and ultimately seal the victory.

SF State jumped on the board first, in the top of the first inning after scoring on a fielding error by UCSD’s third baseman.

The Tritons answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from Maday followed by a Sanders double that gave the hosts a 2-1 lead.

UCSD extended its lead in the third inning when a sacrifice fly from Phillips scored Sanders.

Seven runs in the fourth inning broke open the lead for the hosts, as the Tritons took a nine-run advantage. With the bases loaded, UCSD drew three-straight walks to bring in three runs. Phillips followed that up with a two-run double to left field. Mikaila Reyes and Maday each collected an RBI single to cap the seven-run inning.

Despite trailing by nine runs, SF States' Sarah Higa hit a three-run bomb over left field to bring the Gators back into the game, 10-4. However, it wasn’t enough as UCSD walked away with the win.

Freshman Lizzy Beutter pitched six innings for the Tritons’, earning the win after giving up three earned runs and seven hits. She tallied three strikeouts and only allowed one walk. Brown came in relief of Beutter for the final inning and collected two strikeouts.

The Gators’ Lindsey Cassidy and Clark split time in the circle. Cassidy was credited with the loss after giving up 10 runs and nine walks. Clark pitched three innings and struck out two.

The Tritons return to the field March 11-12 when they travel to CCAA opponent Cal State East Bay to play a four-game series. The doubleheader Friday, March 11 is scheduled to start at noon while Saturday’s games are set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
