ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The University of California San Diego softball team suffered a doubleheader defeat at the hands of California Collegitate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent Sonoma State, Wednesday afternoon at Seawolf Softball Field. UC San Diego fell 2-1 in the first game before dropping a 6-2 decision in the series finale. The Seawolves take the series after splitting the doubleheader on Tuesday.
With the losses, the Tritons are 15-15 on the season and 10-14 in CCAA play. SSU improves to 23-8 overall and 18-6 in the conference.
SSU pitcher Brielle Vidmar (9-3) threw a complete game and only allowed five hits and one run as the Tritons suffered a 2-1 loss.
UCSD started out strong, scoring a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Kendall Baker got things going with a double to left field. Junior Kelsi Maday followed with an RBI double to score Baker.
The Seawolves used two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to ultimately seal the win. Jordann White had an RBI double to knot the game, 1-1, before Sarah Langley hit an infield single that scored White.
The Tritons did not register a hit in the final three innings.
Senior left-handed pitcher Milana Casillas, freshman Alanna Phillips and sophomore Lauren Brown split time on the mound for UCSD. Casillas earned the loss after pitching 4.0 innings and allowing two runs and four hits.
UCSD scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to come within one, 3-2, of SSU but the Seawolves' Jenny Colazo had a three RBI home run in the bottom of the inning to seal the four-run victory.
The two teams did not score through three innings. SSU jumped on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs to take the lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, sophomore Maddy Lewis had a two RBI double down the left field line that scored Maday and Chestnut but it wasn't enough as SSU walked away with the win.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Lizzy Beutter (4-5) earned the loss after giving up three runs and six hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Phillips came in relief of Beutter for two innings and allowed two runs. Sophomore Lauren Brown threw .2 innings and gave up one run.
Maday went two-for-three at the plate and tallied a run while Lewis had two RBI and two hits.
Gabby Dupree (4-0) earned the win in the cirlce for SSU. She pitched 4.0 innings, gave up two runs and seven hits.
UCSD will stay in Northern California and play six more games in the next three days at the Tournament of Champions, presented by the City of Turlock and hosted by Stanislaus State. The Tritons face MSU Billings at 9 a.m., followed by Western Oregon at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 31.
