UCSD Splits a Pair of Games to Open Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. - The University of California San Diego split a pair of games to open the Tournament of Champions, presented by the City of Turlock and hosted by Stanislaus State, Friday at Pedretti Sports Complex. UC San Diego slipped past Montana State Billings 4-3 in its first game of the day before falling to Western Oregon, 4-1, in the second game.

UCSD is now 16-16 overall. With the loss to the Tritons, MSU Billings falls to 12-20 on the season. WOU improves to 12-11.

GAME ONE
UCSD jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off a comeback from the Yellowjackets to win, 4-3.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Lizzy Beutter (5-5) pitched 5.1 innings, struckout five batters and did not allow through five innings. She was credited with her fifth win of the season. Senior lefty Milana Casillas earned her first save of the season after thowing 1.2 innings in relief of Beutter. She allowed one hit and one run.

The Tritons got out to a quick start, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Kendall Baker made it home off a fielding error by the Yellowjacket left fielder. Junior Ashley Chestnut followed with an RBI single that scored juniors Lauren Sanders and Kelsi Maday.

In the third inning, Chestnut singled to score Maday and give UCSD a 4-0 cushion.

Katelyn Stringari hit a big single up the middle that scored two MSUB runners and cut the lead, 4-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the seventh inning, the Yellowjackets’ Megan Dettling hit a bomb over left center to bring MSUB within one, 4-3. However, it wasn’t enough as the Tritons escaped with the narrow victory.

Chestnut went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Maday had two runs and stole two bases. The Yellowjackets’ Dettling had two hits and an RBI. In the circle, Maddy Lincoln (8-9) pitched a complete game and took the loss after giving up three earned runs and five hits.

GAME TWO
Despite an early lead, UCSD gave up three runs in the sixth inning to ultimately suffer a 4-1 loss at the hands of WOU.

Sanders hit a big home run over left center to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Wolves answered in the bottom of the third when Destiny Kuehl had an RBI single to knot the game at one.

WOU sealed its victory in the sixth inning with a home run to left field from Kuehl and a two RBI double.

The Tritons were retired in order in the top of the seventh.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Lauren Brown (5-7) was credited with the loss after giving up four runs in 5.2 innings pitched. Beutter came in relief of Brown for .1 innings. The Wolves’ Sammi Cadwallader pitched all seven innings and only allowed four hits and one run. She tallied three strikeouts.

UCSD will continue playing in the three-day Tournament of Champions on Saturday, April 1. UCSD will take on Northwest Nazarene at 9 a.m. and Western Washington at 11:30 a.m.
