With the split, the Tritons move to 21-19 overall and 12-16 in the CCAA. Nationally-ranked Humboldt State is 28-7 on the season and 16-6 in the conference. UCSD sits in seventh in the CCAA standings while Humboldt State is third.
The Tritons scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to try to come back from a four-run deficit and capture the win, but fell short and suffered a 6-4 loss.
Illa Haley got things going for the Lumberjacks in the top of the first inning. With two outs, she hit a three-run bomb over left center field to give HSU an early lead. UCSD answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs to close the gap and make it a one-run game. Junior Kendall Baker singled before Junior Kelsi Maday homered over left center field to put the Tritons on the board.
HSU had three runs in the fifth inning to pull away and ultimately seal the win. Tiffany Hollingsworth had an RBI single followed by a two-run double from Haley.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tritons notched two unearned runs. Sophomore Maddy Lewis reached on a fielder’s choice before Maday singled up the middle. Junior Kendall Woken made it to first on a throwing error by the HSU third baseman and Lewis scored. Maday made it across home plate on a wild pitch.
Maday went two-for-three at the plate with two RBI, two runs and a home run. Baker had two hits and two runs and junior Ashley Chestnut tallied a hit. The Lumberjacks’ Illa Haley tallied five RBI and two hits.
In the circle, sophomore righty Lauren Brown (9-8) was credited with the loss after giving up five runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Senior lefty Milana Casillas came in relief of Brown and gave up one run in 2.2 innings of work. Madison Williams (13-5) pitched a complete game, notched nine strikeouts and allowed two earned runs.
UCSD scored two runs in the fifth inning to come from behind and take the series final, 3-2.
The Lumberjacks jumped on the board first when Haley reached on a fielder’s choice and Sydney Roberts made it home.
HSU extended its lead in the second inning. Kalyn Paque homered over left field to give the Jacks’ a 2-0 advantage. The Tritons answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run to make it a 2-1 ball game. Sophomore Caitlyn Weisner walked before Rachel Phillips singled. Freshman Brittney Ross-Smith followed with an RBI single that scored Weisner.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Baker got things started with a single to left field, before stealing second and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from Lewis. Maday hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Baker and knot the game at two. Junior Lauren Sanders followed with a bomb over left field to ultimately seal the victory.
The Lumberjacks had three hits and loaded the bases in the seventh inning but fell short in the end.
Baker, Chestnut and Ross-Smith each had two hits while Baker also swiped one base. Freshman Lizzy Beutter earned her sixth win of the season in the circle. She struckout four, walked three and gave up two runs in 6.2 innings of work. Brown came in relief of Beutter and was credited with a save.
Paque (13-2) earned the loss for HSU after allowing three earned runs.
Next up, the Tritons travel to Chico State for a four-game series April 14-15. Friday's doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m. The first of two games on Saturday is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
