UCSD Concludes Regular Season With Series Sweep of Stanislaus State
The two wins give the Tritons a 30-22 overall record. UCSD finished CCAA play 21-19 and sixth in the conference standings. Stanislaus State ends its 2017 season at 23-32 overall and 13-27 in the CCAA. The Warriors conclude conference play in eighth place. Both teams had already been mathematically eliminated from the CCAA Tournament. UCSD's season is also likely over, with the Tritons 10th in the second NCAA West Region poll, and needing to be in the top eight come NCAA selection time.
Eight runs in the fifth inning powered UCSD past Stanisluas State as the Tritons earned the five-run victory.
UCSD got on the board first with three runs in the third inning. Junior Kendall Baker got things going with an RBI groundout followed by an RBI single from freshman Danica Kazakoff. Junior Kelsi Maday capped the inning with a double down the left field line that scored Kazakoff.
The Warriors answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs to knot the game, 3-3.
An eight-run top of the fifth inning gave the Tritons an 11-3 lead. With the bases loaded, junior Lauren Sanders has an RBI single to get the scoring started. Junior Ashley Chestnut followed with a single up the middle that scored Kazakoff.
Another single, this time from sophomore Caitlyn Weisner brought Maday home. Junior Kendall Woken reached on a fielder's choice to score Sanders before sophomore Maddy Lewis had an RBI single to left field. Singles from Baker and Kazakoff brought in UCSD's last three runs of the inning.
The Tritons added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Kazakoff had a sacrifice fly that scored Lewis.
Stan State had a run in the fifth and seventh innings but it wasn't enough as UCSD took game three.
Kazakoff went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI while Lewis finished 3-for-4 with three runs. The Warriors' Alexus Martinez had three hits.
In the circle, sophomore Lauren Brown (12-9) earned her 12th win of the season after pitching 4.1 innings and giving up one earned run. She tallied three strikeouts. Freshman Lizzy Beutter came in relief of Brown for 2.2 innings of work.
Kylie Ragsdale (12-13) threw 6.1 innings and gave up 12 runs for the loss.
The Tritons came from behind to secure a four-run victory in the series finale.
Stanislaus State jumped on the board first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. UCSD knotted the game at one when Weisner had an RBI double that scored Chestnut.
In the top of the fifth, Maday had a big double to right field that scored Danielle Stedman and Baker to give the Tritons' a 3-1 lead. The Warriors added another run in the bottom of the inning to make it a one-run game.
Junior Rachel Phillips had an RBI single in the sixth inning and Weisner had a three RBI home run over center field to give UCSD its final four runs.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors' Nicolette Vizcaino doubled up the middle to bring home a runner.
Weisner went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and run while Maday had two hits and two RBI. As a team, UCSD tallied six stolen bases.
Senior lefty Milana Casillas (9-5) was credited with the win after throwing 5.0 innings and giving up two runs. Brown came in relief of Casillas and allowed one run in 2.0 innings of work.
Kristin Borst pitched a complete game for Stan State and earned the loss after giving up all seven runs.
