UC San Diego Sweeps Opening Day at Desert Stinger Tournament
LAS VEGAS - The University of California San Diego softball team swept its season-opening doubleheader on Friday at the Desert Stinger, defeating Concordia (Ore.), 9-1, to begin the day before knocking off Fort Lewis College, 4-3, in eight innings.
Freshman pitcher Robyn Wampler, making her first two collegiate appearances, earned the win in each game while sophomore first baseman Brittney Ross-Smith finished a combined 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
“It was an exciting day. I’m glad we won that last game (against Fort Lewis College),” said UC San Diego head coach Patti Gerckens. “(Wampler) did a phenomenal job in the pitcher’s circle and had amazing composure for a freshman.
“Everyone really contributed.”
Ross-Smith went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored to lift UC San Diego (2-0) to a season-opening victory over Concordia (Ore.), 9-1.
Wampler pitched a complete game in her debut, allowing one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Senior Kelsi Maday finished 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored as the Tritons improved to 3-0 all-time against the Cavaliers.
Sophomore Mikaila Reyes led off the top half of the second inning with a double to left, and advanced to third on senior Kendall Woken’s groundout to second. Ross-Smith’s single to center scored Reyes, putting the Tritons ahead early, 1-0.
UC San Diego used its speed to build on its lead in the fourth. Woken led off with a double to center and scored on another single by Ross-Smith. Sophomore Danielle Stedman pinch-ran for Ross-Smith, stole both second and third, and eventually scored on an error to make it 3-0 after four.
The Tritons remained aggressive in the sixth to add two more to its lead. Ross-Smith was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The sophomore first baseman advanced to third on freshman Isabel Lavrov’s groundout and scored on an error.
Maday followed with a single to center and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
UC San Diego went 9-for-10 in stolen-base attempts for the game.
Senior Kendall Baker drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the winning run, as UC San Diego defeated Fort Lewis College, 4-3.
Trailing by one going into the bottom half of the inning, the Tritons showed great patience at the plate to push across the winning run.
With Reyes placed on second to begin the inning due to tournament rules, Lavrov started a two-out rally with a single up the middle to score Reyes and knot the score, 3-3.
Danica Kazakoff drew a walk and Maday was hit by a pitch. That set up Baker, who worked a full count before drawing the game-winning walk.
Ross-Smith capped off a perfect day at the plate by going 2-for-2 with two RBI, while freshman catcher Bobbi Aguirre finished 2-for-3.
UC San Diego resumes tournament action on Saturday, as the Tritons take on Academy of Art at 2 p.m., before facing Azusa Pacific at 7 p.m.
