Tritons Let Two Slip Away; Settle for Four-Game Split at No. 5 Humboldt State This Weekend

ARCATA, Calif. — The University of California San Diego softball team dropped two games on Saturday to split this weekend’s four-game series against No. 5-ranked Humboldt State.

After sweeping two games on Friday, UC San Diego (9-4, 4-4 CCAA) held early leads in each of Saturday’s games, but was unable to hold on.

The Tritons lost the first game on a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning, 4-3, while UC San Diego came up short in the second game of the day, 5-3.

“We were winning both games, but just didn’t finish the way we should have,” said UC San Diego head coach Patti Gerckens. “I don’t think we were overconfident, but we can’t be afraid to succeed.”

Senior Kelsi Maday finished the day 3-for-6 with a home run, a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Game 1
Maday went 2-for-3 with a home run and a stolen base, but the Tritons were unable to maintain its early lead and lost 4-3 in eight innings on a walk-off single by Danica Grier.

UC San Diego scored three runs in the third as freshman Isabel Lavrov’s RBI single was followed by Maday’s two-run blast to left to pull ahead, 3-1.

Humboldt State (6-7, 4-4) responded in the third to pull within one when Halle Williams stole home with one out, and knotted the score, 3-3, on Lona Dengler’s RBI double to center in the fourth.

Freshman pitcher Robyn Wampler took the loss for just the second time this season, allowing four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched.

Game 2
The Tritons jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t hold off the surging Lumberjacks, as UC San Diego lost the second game of the day to Humboldt State, 5-3.

Lavrov finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored, while junior shortstop Maddy Lewis went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Sophomore pitcher Alanna Phillips was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs on four hits in three innings pitched.

Lewis’ two-RBI double in the first put the Tritons on top 2-0, and UC San Diego took a 3-1 lead on freshman Bobbi Aguirre’s sacrifice fly in the third.

The Lumberjacks took the lead for good in the fourth however, as Williams hit a two-RBI double and Micaela Harris followed with a fielders-choice RBI. Humboldt State added an insurance run in the fifth on Kelly Sonnemann’s sac-bunt RBI.

UC San Diego returns to action next weekend when the Tritons play host to Cal State San Marcos for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. First pitch for Friday’s Game 1 is scheduled for 3 p.m.
