No. 22 Tritons Drop Both Games to No. 5 Chico State
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked UC San Diego softball team was shutout 2-0 and 6-0 on Thursday night to lose the first two games of a four-game series with No. 5 Chico State.
Chico State's Haley Gilham threw a two-hitter in Game 1 and Naomi Monahan pitched a four-hit shutout in Game 2 to lift the Wildcats to a sweep of the twin bill. UC San Diego's Robyn Wampler allowed just one earned run across seven innings as she tried to go toe-to-toe with Gilham in Game 1.
UC San Diego (19-6, 12-6 CCAA) had its ten-game win streak snapped.
Gilham allowed just four Triton baserunners in her complete game shutout as Chico State took the first game 2-0.
The Wildcats manufactured the first run of the game in the top half of the sixth inning when a runner on third base scored on shortstop Danica Kazakoff's fielding error with two out.
The following inning, Chico State led off with a double and single to put runners on second and third. Two batters later, Kristin Worley drove in the runner from third on a sacrifice fly to center, extending the lead to 2-0.
Wampler (13-3) gave up two runs - one earned, five hits, three walks and struck out four. Junior Maddy Lewis reached base 2x by way of a hit and a walk.
Chico State's Monahan was equally dominant in the second game, allowing just four hits across seven innings in the 6-0 win.
Monahan received early run support from her teammates in the first inning when Cyrena Taylor blasted a two-run double to right center to score Worley and Karli Skowrup. Both runs were unearned.
In the third, Bailee Akins belted a two-run home run to center to push the Wildcats' lead to 4-0.
Chico State scored again in the sixth on hits from Worley and Skowrup to make it 5-0. The seventh inning saw Claire Wayne drive a ball over the left field wall for a solo home run to seal the 6-0 victory for the Wildcats.
Tritons' Sophomore Alanna Phillips (4-3) started the game and allowed five runs, three of which were earned on six hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. Junior Kristyana Boghossian tossed the remaining 3.2 innings giving up one earned run on two hits and striking out three. Lewis and freshman Sherriah Harrington each had a two-hit game for UC San Diego in the loss.
UC San Diego returns to action tomorrow to play the final two games of the series against Chico State. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 11:00 a.m.
