No. 22 UC San Diego Splits Doubleheader on Friday With No. 5 Chico State
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked University of California San Diego softball team used an offensive outburst in Game 1 of its doubleheader with No. 5 Chico State on Friday afternoon to earn its only victory of the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series.
Triton freshman Robyn Wampler pitched well inside the circle and the offense produced double-digit runs, to win the first game of the twin bill, 10-2 in a run-rule-shortened five innings. Chico State answered with nine runs of its own, however, in the second game, including a pair of home runs, to take it 9-6.
This is UC San Diego's (20-7, 13-7 CCAA) first series loss since dropping three-of-four at Sonoma State on March 28 and 29 of last season.
The Tritons scored 10 runs on 14 hits and Wampler earned another victory in the 10-2 win in five innings to begin Friday's doubleheader.
UC San Diego was able to generate offense off Chico State's star-pitcher Haley Gilham, forcing her out of the game after allowing seven earned runs in just 2.2 innings. The seven runs were a season high, and the 2.2 innings of work matched her shortest start of the season.
Most of the damage done by the Tritons came in the third inning. Nine UCSD hits led to eight runs, including senior Lauren Sanders' pinch-hit, three-run double to right center. Senior Kelsi Maday had the ninth and final hit of the inning through the infield and into center, making the score 8-1.
Wampler (14-3) pitched all five innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits and striking out five.
Freshman Sherriah Harrington went 4-for-4 with three hits and walk. Maday too went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Chico State bounced back in the second game on Friday, using nine runs of its own to win 9-6 and ultimately win the four-game series.
In the second inning, sophomore Danica Kazakoff converted an RBI sacrifice fly for the Tritons' first run of the game. A passed ball and a Baker single down the left field line put them ahead 3-2.
The following inning, Chico State's Bailey Akins hit her second home run of the series to tie it at three runs apiece.
The Wildcats in the top of the fourth inning used three hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch to score three more runs and take a 6-3 lead. Chico State scored one more run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to go ahead 9-3.
UC San Diego closed the margin in half in the seventh inning with a three-run home run from Harrington to make it a 9-6 score, but would still fall just short.
Junior Kristyana Boghossian started the game, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing two earned runs. Sophomore Alanna Phillips contributed an inning of relief, while Wampler (14-4) struggled, surrendering four earned runs across 2.1 innings.
UC San Diego returns to action after final exams with a non-conference home doubleheader on Tuesday, March 27, against No. 17 Concordia Irvine. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 4 p.m.
