No. 18 UC San Diego Splits Doubleheader With SF State on Friday

SAN FRANCISCO - The 18th-ranked University of California San Diego softball team split its doubleheader with San Francisco State on Friday afternoon at SFSU Softball Field.

Freshman pitcher Robyn Wampler and sophomore Alanna Phillips were both involved in pitching duels in both games as UC San Diego won game one but dropped game two.

Game 1
Wampler (15-5) pitched a complete game shutout for the third time this season as the Tritons took game one of the twin bill, 2-0.

Kendall Baker led the game off with a walk before advancing to second base by way of a sacrifice bunt the next at-bat. The senior would score later in the inning on a single by classmate Lauren Sanders and UCSD led 1-0 through one inning.

UC San Diego wouldn't tack on its second run of the game until the seventh inning when junior Maddy Lewis tripled to right field. The following at-bat, freshman Bobbi Aguirre drove in her team-leading 30th RBI on the year with a single and put the Tritons ahead, 2-0.

Wampler was stellar allowing just four hits, walking one batter and striking out seven, as she dropped her season ERA to an impressive 1.40 mark.

Freshman Michele Ota went 2-for-2 at the plate, and sophomore Brittney Ross-Smith was 1-for-4 with a double.

Game 2
San Francisco State pitcher Karla Soto pitched all seven innings and only surrendered a lone run as the Tritons lost the second game on Friday, 2-1.

In the third inning, freshman Sherriah Harrington reached base on a throwing error by the Gators. After Harrington advanced to second the following at-bat, she would then score on a Lewis base hit and make the score 1-0.

SFSU tacked on a run in the fourth and used a Katie Rohrer RBI double in the sixth to push the lead to 2-1.

Phillips (4-5) pitched six strong innings in the defeat. She allowed two earned runs on five hits and two strikeouts.

Freshman Danica Kazakoff was 2-for-3 at the plate and Harrington reached base twice by way of a hit and a walk.
