SAN FRANCISCO -The 18th-ranked University of California San Diego softball team continued the narrative of strong pitching in its series at San Francisco State, cruising to the doubleheader sweep on Saturday at SFSU Softball Field by final scores of 6-0 and 7-1.
With the two results, UC San Diego clinched the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series victory, three games to one, as the sides had split Friday's initial twin bill.
Robyn Wampler was one out away from pitching her first collegiate no-hitter, and finished with a complete-game shutout for the second consecutive day. She now has four on the year.
The UC San Diego (23-10, 16-10 CCAA) pitching staff allowed just two runs across the four games.
Wampler (16-5) was dominant throughout and the UCSD bats came back alive en route to a 6-0 win in the first game of the twin bill.
In the first inning, senior Kendall Baker and junior Maddy Lewis walked on consecutive at-bats. With Aguirrie at the plate, the freshman would single to left field to load the bases and the senior Maday then drove in Baker by way of a sacrifice fly and make the score 1-0.
Maday homered for the third time this season in the fourth inning to push the Triton lead to 2-0.
A Harrington two-RBI single, Baker run-scoring triple and junior Sharona Mataele's RBI single in the seventh inning gave UC San Diego four insurance runs and 6-0 lead.
After forcing a groundout and striking one out to begin the seventh, Wampler would surrender a single to left field to break up the no-hitter. The freshman ultimately allowed two hits, walked two and struck out nine.
UC San Diego scored seven runs on 14 hits to take the second game of the doubleheader, 7-1.
Lewis and Maday each drove in a run, and Mataele would hit an RBI single in the first inning to give the Tritons an early 3-0 lead.
UCSD quickly added two more runs in the second inning, and Harrington would hit a two-run homer, the freshman's fourth of the season, to extend its lead to 7-1 in the seventh.
The pitching trio of junior Kristyana Boghossian and sophomores Alanna Phillips and Dominique Acosta (1-0) only surrendered a combined six hits and one unerned run in the victory.
UC San Diego will get set for another four-game CCAA road series at Cal State San Bernardino, with doubleheaders on Friday, April 6, and Saturday, April 7. First pitch on Friday is set for 1 p.m.
