No. 5 Seed UC San Diego Will Meet Fourth-Seeded California Baptist in First Round of NCAA Regionals
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego softball team drew the fifth seed and will meet fourth-seeded California Baptist in the opening round of an NCAA Division II West Regional. The association announced its postseason selections Monday.
The game is slated for Thursday, May 10, at 12 p.m. at Chico State's University Softball Field.
Entering with a 35-17 overall record, UC San Diego is making its 10th appearance in the NCAA Division II postseason. The Tritons placed second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), going 27-13. California Baptist, out of the PacWest Conference, finished its regular season with a 33-10 overall record and a 25-7 mark in league play, good for second place. In the most recent national rankings, UC San Diego is 20th and California Baptist is 15th.
The game will be the first meeting between the Tritons and Lancers since April of 2014.
Top-seeded Chico State will take on Northwest Nazarene, the eighth seed, on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the regional's other match-up. The four team, double elimination tournament continues Friday and concludes Saturday.
The second West Regional will be hosted by No. 2 Concordia Irvine. The Eagles will entertain No. 3 Dixie State, No. 6 Cal State San Bernardino, and No. 7 Academy of Art.
The winners of each Regional will meet in a Super Regional, May 17-18. The winner of the best-of-three Super Regional advances to the Division II Championship, May 24-28 at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
