Four Tritons Named to NFCA All-Region Teams
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Four University of California San Diego softball players garnered National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-West Region accolades as the organization announced its selections Wednesday.
Designated player Sherriah Harrington (Chula Vista/Eastlake HS) was named to the NFCA All-West Region First Team, while catcher Bobbi Aguirre, outfielder Kelsi Maday, and pitcher Robyn Wampler were members of the second team.
An All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) First Team performer, Harrington leads UC San Diego in batting average (.411) and slugging percentage (.634). The freshman is second on the team in on base percentage (.477), doubles (8), and triples (1). Among all CCAA players in conference games, she ranked first in average (.430) and on base percentage (.500) and seventh in slugging (.616). Harrington has produced 16 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games. This season, she has had an eight-game hit streak and an 11-game reached base streak.
Aguirre, also a freshman, was an All-CCAA Second Team and a CCAA All-Tournament Team pick. She leads the Tritons in hits (54), home runs (8), RBI (50), and total bases (84) and is second in average (.375), triples (1), slugging (.583), and walks (18). In the CCAA, she ranked first in RBI (45), third in home runs (8) and total bases (72), fourth in slugging (.637), fifth in average (.389), seventh in hits (44), and 10th in on base percentage (.459). Aguirre has registered 13 multiple-hit games and 13 multiple-RBI games and had a 10-game hit streak earlier in the season.
The 2018 CCAA Most Valuable Player and an All-CCAA First Team and CCAA All-Tournament selection, Maday leads the team in steals (29) and total sacrifices (12) and is second in runs (37), hits (52), and RBI (32). In the CCAA, she is first in sac flies (5), third in steals (20), sixth in runs (30), seventh in batting average (.385), eighth in slugging (.577), and ninth in home runs (5) and RBI (24). Nationally, the senior ranks 17th in sacrifice flies and 55th in steals. Maday has 11 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games with a 13-game hit streak and a 20-game reached base streak.
Wampler, who was tabbed the CCAA Freshman of the Year and All-CCAA First Team, led the CCAA in strikeouts (134), shutouts (5), and saves (5) and was second in the league in wins (17), ERA (1.41), and innings (144.0). Nationally, she is ninth in wins (24), 10th in saves (5), 27th in strikeouts (186), 33rd in shutouts (6), and 35th in ERA (1.67). Wampler has struck out at least 10 batters in five games, with a career-best 12 strikeouts against Cal State Dominguez Hills. She was named the CCAA Pitcher of the Week four times this season.
This year’s NFCA All-Region squads are comprised of 207 student-athletes from 120 programs. The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s eight regions with first and second team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all of the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2018 NFCA Division II All-America squads.
Fifth-seeded UC San Diego (35-17) opens NCAA West Regional play against fourth-seeded California Baptist (33-10) on Thursday at noon at Chico State.
