Sherriah Harrington and Robyn Wampler Named to NFCA Player of the Year Watch List
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sherriah Harrington and Robyn Wampler of the No. 23 University of California San Diego softball team were named to the 2019 Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II National Player of the Year “Watch List.” The NFCA announced the 50 student-athletes on its “Watch List” on Thursday afternoon, as voted on by its Division II All-America Committee. Harrington and Wampler are two of just 10 sophomores to earn spots on the NFCA’s “Watch List.” Both players put together phenomenal freshman seasons, taking home All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and NFCA All-West Region honors for their performances. Harrington, whose .410 batting average was a conference best, came away with an NFCA All-America Third Team nod. Wampler, who led the CCAA in strikeouts (214) and ranked second in ERA (1.81), received a Fastpitch News All-America Honorable Mention.
UC San Diego was one of only six teams from across the country to have multiple players named to the NFCA’s “Watch List.” Fellow CCAA member No. 7 Chico State produced two candidates as well. With two players from each of those schools and one from Humboldt State, the CCAA’s five honorees were the most of any conference.
The NFCA will announce its top 25 finalists for the Player of the Year award on April 25, followed by its top 10 on May 14, and the winner will be revealed on May 30. A student-athlete does not have to be on the “Watch List” to be eligible for the award.
Harrington, Wampler, and the Tritons will compete in their first home contests tomorrow, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills for doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday.
