Maddy Lewis, Mikaila Reyes Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Maddy Lewis and Mikaila Reyes of the No. 14 University of California San Diego softball team were named to the Google Cloud Division II Academic All-District 8 Softball First Team. The student-athletes were two of 11 honorees from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and Pacific West Conference, which comprise District 8.

Lewis, who also was named to the Academic All-District 8 team in 2018, holds a 3.85 GPA as a Communication major. The senior has successfully balanced her outstanding four-year Triton softball career with her efforts in the classroom. The three-time All-CCAA recipient has garnered CCAA All-Academic honors every year so far. Lewis also earned a spot on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Academic Team in her first year, the same season she was named CCAA Freshman of the Year.

This season, Lewis and Reyes are the only Tritons who have started in all 50 games. Lewis has excelled in all facets during the season, taking care of business defensively, at the plate, and on the base paths. At third base, Lewis has recorded a CCAA-best 121 assists as well as 39 putouts. The Alameda native also holds the team’s second-highest on-base percentage, .441, and has scored a UC San Diego-best 35 runs. Lewis’ speed has factored into that, as she leads the team with 18 stolen bases as well.

Reyes’ accolade is her first career Academic All-District 8 recognition. The junior holds a nearly-perfect 3.98 GPA, majoring in Physiology and Neuroscience. The future oncologist is no stranger to academic recognition, as she has twice been named to the CCAA All-Academic team. She was also the 2018 CCAA Championship Scholar, as her GPA was the highest of any student-athlete to play in the CCAA Softball Tournament.

Like Lewis, Reyes is another top defensive player. In right field, the San Diego product has compiled a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, recording 70 putouts and four assists. At the plate, Reyes has driven in 19 runs while scoring 18. She has demonstrated her power, with four home runs and 10 total extra-base hits.

Lewis, Reyes, and the rest of the Triton softball team will return to action on Thursday, as they compete at the West Region Super Regional. UC San Diego will face No. 9 Concordia Irvine for the best two-of-three series, playing at Eagles Field in Irvine.
