Triton Softball Coaches Named NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of California San Diego softball coaching staff has been named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) West Region Coaching Staff of the Year. The NFCA announced the recipients on Tuesday morning, as voted on by NFCA member coaches. UC San Diego’s staff consists of Head Coach Patti Gerckens, Associate Head Coach Jessica Millsap, Assistant Coaches Megan Griffith and Nicole Hennessey, and Volunteer Assistant Coach Ray Noelte.
The Triton staff led the team to its top finish in the past seven seasons. UC San Diego finished its regular season with an overall record of 37-17 and a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) mark of 24-9, not losing a single conference series during the regular season.
The Tritons’ record was good for first place in the league, as UC San Diego became the CCAA Regular Season Champions. With the achievement, four student-athletes garnered All-CCAA First Team recognition, while Gerckens was dubbed the conference’s Coach of the Year.
UC San Diego’s coaching staff continued to lead the Tritons to success during the postseason. As the hosts of the NCAA Division II West 2 Regional, the Tritons bounced back from a loss to Chico State by winning their next three games and earning a spot in the West Super Regional.
Playing at top-seed Concordia Irvine, the Tritons topped the Eagles in the first two games of the best-of-three series to claim the West Region title. UC San Diego punched its ticket to Denver in a thrilling 4-3 walk-off victory over the Eagles.
At the finals of the NCAA Division II National Championship, the Tritons closed out their phenomenal season in Denver, falling to fellow regional champions Augustana and West Chester.
Under Gerckens, Millsap, Griffith, Hennessey, and Noelte, three players received Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-West Region honors.
This is the third time that UC San Diego has earned the NFCA’s West Region Coaching Staff of the Year honor with Gerckens at the helm. Her staffs also won the award in 2011 and 2012.
