LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of California San Diego Triton Softball Field received the 2019 Division II Turface Athletics / NFCA Field of the Year award, the committee announced Tuesday afternoon. The accolade acknowledges the best stadiums in the country with respect to maintenance and quality of playing surface.

In 2010, a brand-new renovation to the softball field, made possible by Triton softball alumna, Dana Chaiken (’91), included sunken dugouts, a netted backstop, a press box, stadium-seating and an outfield fence. The state-of-the art facility now holds a capacity of 750 spectators, featuring lights that illuminate the field and the newly designed turf-floor batting cage.

Since the grand opening, helmet cubbies and bat racks have been installed inside the dugouts, in addition to an advanced scoreboard positioned down the left field foul line.

The UC San Diego softball coaching staff tends to the perfection of the dirt playing surface, while UC San Diego Recreation Field Operations ensures the grass remains in excellent condition year-round. The coaches and players also contribute to the stunning ambience, cleaning the field before and after home events, including repetitive polishing of railings and the backstop and sweeping of dugouts and walkways.

The stadium setup offers a great view of the entire field, in which fans have the ability to sponsor individual chair-backs as part of the seating campaign. Above the stands, visitors have access to a restaurant and coffee shop allowing for more comfort while watching competitions.

UC San Diego has hosted the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament twice since the stadium's upgrades. Last year, the Tritons clinched the Super Regional on the beauty of their home turf.
