Tritons Lead, Hayden Hui Tied for First After Opening Day of Johnson Shootout
Release: Monday 09/19/2016

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's golf team leads by 14 strokes and freshman Hayden Hui is tied for first following Monday's opening day of play at the Johnson Shootout, hosted by Cal State Dominguez Hills at Industry Hills Golf Club, just east of Los Angeles.

UC San Diego, playing in its first tournament of the 2016-17 season, led after both rounds, shooting a 286 over the first 18 holes and following up with a 289 in the second round for a 575, 7-over par.

The Tritons' 286 was their lowest round since firing a 285 in round two of the Sonoma State Invitational on Oct. 12, 2015.

"I am excited about our team," said fourth-year UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "Today was a complete team effort in which everyone contributed."

Hui, who was fourth after carding a 71 in round one, shot a 2-under 69 in the second round to total a 140 and move into a tie for the top individual spot with Andrew Fernandes of Dominguez Hills.

Two other Tritons can currently be found among the top 10 on the leaderboard, including sophomore Jake Haselden and freshman Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS). Haselden (77-69--146) is fifth, while Navigato (72-75--147) is tied for sixth place.

The 69s shot by Hui and Haselden were the lone sub-70 rounds posted by anyone in the 34-player field.

Freshman Jacob Johnson (73-76--149) and junior Mateusz Kucz (70-79--149) are both tied for 11th.

Cal State San Bernardino (589, +21) is in second place, followed by Stanislaus State (593, +25) and Sonoma State (593, +25) tied for third. The host Toros (606, +38) are fifth and NCAA Division III school Whittier (698, +130) is sixth. Whittier is the only non-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) school in the tourney.

"We are looking forward to tomorrow and the opportunity to compete for both a team and individual title," said Ragan.

Tuesday's third and final round, which consists of 18 holes, gets underway at 7:30 a.m.
