Release: Monday 10/03/2016

CHICO, Calif. - Following two rounds Monday at Chico State's Wildcat Classic, the University of California San Diego men's golf team is tied for 11th place in the 16-squad field.

UC San Diego shot a 298 in the opening round and followed with a 306 in the second for a team total of 604, 28-over par on the Butte Creek Country Club course. The Tritons were tied for fifth after round one.

"It was a tough day for the team today," said UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "We started well but failed to bounce back after losing the success we demonstrated early in the first round."

Individually, Mateusz Kucz (75-75--150) and Adam Navigato (74-76--150) are the leaders for UCSD, tied for 36th place. Jake Haselden (73-79--152) is tied for 50th, Hayden Hui (80-76--156) is tied for 72nd and Jacob Johnson (76-85--161) is tied for 85th.

Playing as an individual and not figuring in the team scoring, Triton senior Drew Robbins is tied for 23rd after shooting 73-75 for a 148.

Chico State, ranked sixth nationally, leads the pack with a 5-over 581. The Wildcats were third after carding a 293 in round one, but moved into first following a 288 in the second round.

Simon Fraser is three strokes back and Colorado School of Mines is in third, seven strokes behind Chico.

On the individual leaderboard, Nic Beno of Colorado School of Mines and Marcus Brown of Simon Fraser are tied for first, each with a 2-under 142 on the par-72, 6,878-yard layout.

The course played to a 75.89 stroke average over the two rounds.

"This is a young team and there is always a learning curve when you step up to the next level of competition," said Ragan. "We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I'm confident this group will rise to the occasion. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a step in the right direction."

Tuesday's third and final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Butte Creek will play just a tad longer, coming in at 6,881 yards. Action can be followed with live scoring.
