CORNING, Calif. - Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) is tied for fourth and the University of California San Diego men's golf team is seventh of 11 squads after the first day of play at the Wildcat Classic Monday. Chico State is hosting the event at The Links at Rolling Hills.
Strong winds forced the field to complete just 18 holes instead of the regular 36.
UC San Diego totaled a 303 (+15) as a team.
Navigato is in a three-way tie for fourth after firing a 1-under par 71 on the 6,850-yard layout. The sophomore carded four birdies and eagled the par-5 15th hole.
"We did not get the results we were looking for or expecting from a team standpoint today," said UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "Team-wise, we need to come out tomorrow and make a lot of birdies."
Also playing for the Tritons are Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (T-24th, 75), Hayden Hui (T-32nd, 77), Ryan Vaughan (T-43rd, 80), and Mateusz Kucz (T-51st, 82). Monday marked the UC San Diego debut for both Woo and Vaughan. Woo is a transfer from Cal State Monterey Bay, while Vaughan is a freshman.
Chico State, ranked 15th nationally, is in front after shooting a 286 (-2), the lone under-par round by any team. Cal State East Bay and No. 14 Cal State Monterey Bay are tied for second, both totaling a 289 (+1).
On the individual leaderboard, Chico's Colby Dean tops the 59-player field thus far, carding a 5-under 67. He holds a three stroke lead over East Bay's Declan Illingsworth and Chico's Kelley Sullivan.
The tournament concludes Tuesday with a second round of 18 holes that is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. start. Play can be followed with live scoring.
