Gross shot rounds of 70 (-2) and 74 (+2) for a 144 on the par-72, 6,561-yard course in northwest Washington. The Los Angeles native is playing as an individual and does not figure into UC San Diego's team scoring.

The Tritons, who are playing in their third tournament in the last week, carded rounds of 306 and 305 for a 611, 35-over par.

"Today was a disappointment for the team," said UC San Diego head coach Jim Ragan. "We need to bounce back and put together a good round tomorrow."
