LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego has named Fred Hanover as its head men's golf coach. The announcement was made Thursday by Director of Athletics Earl Edwards.

Hanover has served as the interim head coach of the program since January of 2019.

“We are extremely thrilled to announce that Fred will be staying with us as head coach of the men’s golf team,” said Edwards. “He did an outstanding job in the few months that he was with the team on an interim basis, leading us to our first NCAA Championships berth in 15 years. Fred developed a strong rapport with our scholar-athletes and we are looking forward to continued success during this exciting time in UC San Diego Athletics.”

In 2019, Hanover led UC San Diego to its first NCAA Division II Championships appearance since 2004. The Tritons placed 14th in West Virginia, the team's best-ever finish at the DII nationals.

UC San Diego punched its ticket to the NCAA Championships with a second-place showing among 20 teams at the West/South Central Regional in Utah, also a program-best.

Junior Hayden Hui, the Tritons' top finisher in 11 of 13 tournaments over the season, was tabbed a GCAA/PING All-West Region selection and All-America honorable mention.

"I am looking forward to working with the team and improving on our accomplishments from this past season," said Hanover. "I am very proud to be a member of the Triton family and I am committed to helping our scholar-athletes achieve success."

Hanover has over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, has taught the game for over 30 years, and is an accomplished professional player.

Hanover served at the University of Redlands as Head Men's Golf Coach from 2015-2018. In his first season with the NCAA Division III Bulldogs, Hanover led the team to a second-place finish at the conference championships and one of his players was the individual medalist. In 2017, Redlands repeated its second-place performance at the conference championships. In 2018, the Bulldogs placed third in the league and produced an individual that went on to compete at the NCAA Championships.

From 1998-2010, Hanover was the first-ever Director of Golf for the men's and women's teams at Cal State San Marcos in San Diego's North County. He developed the institution's golf program from initiation to inception, spearheading recruiting efforts, developing budgets, and implementing two home tournaments. During his time with the Cougars, Hanover was honored as the NAIA Region II Coach of the Year in 2000, 2001, 2007, and 2008. The men and women achieved top 10 national rankings, won more than 10 tournaments, and produced 11 All-Americans.

Hanover was selected to direct the NAIA National Championships in 2007 and 2008 and was chosen by the NAIA to serve as the chair for the 12-school conference in which Cal State San Marcos competed.

He was also a golf lecturer at CSUSM from 2010-2012. In the newly-created position, Hanover developed a curriculum to teach golf to beginner, intermediate, and advanced level players.

Prior to working at Cal State San Marcos, Hanover was the Head Men's Golf Coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 1996-1998. With the Coyotes, he developed the 1997 NCAA Division II individual national champion and was tabbed the 1998 NCAA West Region Coach of the Year.

As a professional player, Hanover has been competing on the PGA Tour Canada since 1987. He placed in the top 100 money winners for seven consecutive years and finished in the top 10 in three tournaments. Hanover also qualified for and played in the 2014 United States Senior Open Championship.

A 1985 graduate of UC Irvine with a bachelor's degree in Political Science, Hanover was named MVP of the Anteaters' golf team in 1984.

In 1987, Hanover founded a business to provide individual and group lessons to executives, children, and adults. He continues to run the organization today.
