Sixth Place Finish for UC San Diego in Season Opener

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The University of California San Diego men's golf team finished sixth of 18 teams as the Western Washington Invitational at Bellingham Golf & Country Club wrapped up Tuesday. It was the first tournament of the season for the Tritons.

UC San Diego totaled 870 strokes, 6 over par, for three rounds. The Tritons shot a 288 in Tuesday's third round to go along with rounds of 287 and 295 on Monday. They were in first place following the opening round, but fell five spots into a tie for sixth after the second round was complete.

Sergi Mata De La Barata Barcons finished as the top Triton, tying for 16th place of 102 golfers. The sophomore was 1 under with rounds of 71, 72, and 72 on the par 72, 6,561 yard layout.

Senior Adam Navigato also placed in the top 20, tying for 18th. The Solana Beach native was even with rounds of 69, 77, and 70. His 69 in Monday's first round was the lowest single round by any Triton during the event.

"I am very pleased with what we were able to accomplish after two weeks of practice and preparation," said UC San Diego head coach Fred Hanover. "We have a very dedicated, committed group and I know they will continue to improve as the season progresses."

Concordia (Ore.) won the team title with an 844 (-20), posting a stellar 271 Tuesday. Ethan Casto of Western Washington and Simon Fraser's Isaac Lee tied for first place, both finishing with a 10 under 206.

UC San Diego is off until Oct. 14-15 when it competes in the Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch in Simi Valley, Calif.
