LA MIRADA, Calif. and AZUSA, Calif. — The University of California San Diego men’s tennis team had several strong performances to begin its fall season in the 2017 ITA Regional Championships.

Senior Eric Tseng, the No. 3-seed in the singles bracket, advanced to the quarterfinals and held the lead in his match over Azusa Pacific’s Jakob Schnaitter, 6-4, 4-3, before being forced to retire due to body cramps. After earning a first-round bye, Tseng defeated Point Loma Nazarene’s Yuki Okamoto in the second round, 6-0, 6-3, before knocking off Hawaii Pacific’s Maxime Gayte, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, in the third round.

“The way (Tseng) was playing was pretty good,” said UC San Diego head coach Timmer Willing. “He was in control.”

Sophomores Marc Isaia and Marius Ruh each won two matches to advance to the third round of play. Isaia topped Allan Lock of Sonoma State, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round before defeating Josephy Bray of Concordia University-Irvine, 6-0, 6-2, in second-round action. Isaia’s run came to an end with a loss to No. 1-seed Oliver Frank of Azusa Pacific, 6-2, 6-3.

Ruh earned a first-round victory over Holy Names’ Javier Luque, 6-3, 6-2, then knocked off APU’s Antonio Pejic, 6-4, 6-3. Ruh suffered a third-round defeat to No. 8-seeded Gerardo Irarrazabal of Hawaii Pacific, 6-2, 6-2.

Senior Adrian Cordova fell to APU’s Jesse Haas, 6-1, 6-0, in first-round action, while sophomore Sreeganesh Manoharan was topped by Concordia’s Nikita Katsnelson, 6-4, 6-4, in the opening round.

“Getting most of our guys through the first day without a lot of practice behind them is a good start,” said Willing. “We had a couple good wins against some of the top teams in the country.

“Overall, I’m pretty happy.”

In doubles action, the Tritons team of Manoharan and Isaia advanced to the quarterfinals before falling short against Hawaii Pacific’s No. 2-seeded duo of Gayte and Benjamin Loccisano, 8-2.

Manoharan and Isaia began tournament play by defeating SSU’s team of Lock and Mitchel Heckmann, 8-4, before topping PLNU’s duo of Brendon Millington and CJ Erion, 8-2, to advance to the quarterfinals.

UC San Diego’s doubles team of Tseng and senior Justin Zhang defeated Jack Alston and Tim Soderman of PLNU in the opening round, 8-4, before being forced to withdraw due to Tseng’s injury. The Tritons team of Ruh and Cordova suffered an opening–round defeat to CUI’s Shimon Murakami and Otto Heinz, 8-4.

UC San Diego resumes its fall schedule on Oct. 6-8 at San Diego State’s Aztec Fall Invitational.
