LOS ANGELES — Senior Eric Tseng continued his outstanding fall season this weekend by advancing to the tournament's main draw, as the Tritons competed in the 61st annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships at USC’s Marks Stadium.

Tseng opened the men’s open singles qualifying draw with a straight-set victory over UC Irvine’s Vatsal Bajpai, 6-4, 6-4, before knocking off No. 5-seed John Pearce of BYU in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 10-5, in the round of 32 to advance to the main draw.

In the main draw round of 16, Tseng dropped a tight match to No. 5-seeded Jake DeVine of USC, 6-4, 7-6 (4). The senior then fell to BYU's Samuel Tullis, 6-2, 6-3, in the main draw consolation bracket.

Fellow senior Justin Zhang earned a victory in his qualifying draw round of 64 matchup with University of San Diego’s Garrett Kurtz, 6-3, 6-0, before falling short in his round of 32 contest against No. 9-seeded Sean Hill of BYU, 6-2, 6-3.

Sophomore Marc Isaia opened singles qualifying draw action strong with a three-set victory in the round of 64 against Concordia’s Daniel Reddmann, 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. He later dropped his round of 32 match against No. 9-seeded Everett Maltby of UC Davis, 6-2, 6-2.

In other men’s open qualifying draw round of 64 action, Sreeganesh Manoharan fell to Asuza Pacific’s Antonio Pejic, 6-2, 6-2; freshman Zach Ermert came up short against No. 9-seeded Chase Masciorini of UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, 6-4; sophomore Marius Ruh lost a hard-fought, three-set match to BYU’s Jacob Tullis, 2-6, 6-2, 10-5; sophomore David Higgins dropped his match to No. 9-seeded Gabe Tishman of Michigan, 6-0, 6-1; junior Richard Han lost a three-set thriller to Mitchell Iwahiro of UC Davis 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.

“We’re playing against very good players and having good matches with them, but we’re not getting the wins because we’re not believing in ourselves yet,” said UC San Diego head coach Timmer Willing. “We have to change that mindset. We’re playing against top-10 teams in Division I, so we have nothing to lose. We’re beating ourselves more than getting beat by our opponent.”

In the doubles qualifying draw, the Tritons team of Han and Higgins topped Concordia’s team of Yubo Chen and Manhom Ko, 8-4, in its opening round of 32 match. The duo eventually dropped its round of 16 match to UC Irvine’s team of Bajpai and Bruce Man-Son-Hing, 8-4.

UC San Diego’s senior team of Tseng and Zhang fell short in the qualifying draw round of 32 to LMU’s team of Cartier Juan and Ethan Prost, 8-5, while Isaia and Ruh dropped its match to UCD’s team of Iwahiro and Jonathan Star, 8-1. In addition, Ermert and Manoharan fell to LMU’s team of Alexander Bourgeois and Ryan Brown, 8-4.

The weekend tournament concludes the Tritons’ fall season, as UC San Diego will now turn its attention toward the spring.
