No. 15 UC San Diego Falls to Hawai'i Hilo, 7-2

KONA, Hawaii — The No. 15 University of California San Diego men’s tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback against Hawai'i Hilo on Friday in Day 1 of the Hawai'i Hilo Invitational.

The dual match began with doubles play, as the Tritons No. 1 team of sophomores Marc Isaia and Sreeganesh Manoharan fell to Hawaii-Hilo’s Vaclav Slezak and Alessandro Giuliato, 8-3. However, the UC San Diego No. 2 duo of seniors Eric Tseng and Justin Zhang defeated Alex Fillat Perez and Bruno Figlia, 8-3.

Hawaii-Hilo took a 2-1 lead when the No. 3 team of freshmen Neil Tengbumroong and Eskil Jarlskog dropped a tight match to Chun En Wu and Gregory Zukeran, 8-6.

In singles action, junior Richard Han came up short against Arturo Dell’Eva, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the No. 5 slot, and Zhang was topped by Giuliato in the No. 2 slot, 6-4, 6-0.

Jarlskog fell short against Fillat in No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3, while sophomore Marius Ruh lost in three sets to Zukeran, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, in the No. 6 slot.

Isaia dropped his No. 3 singles match to Wu in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, before Tseng earned the Tritons’ second point of the dual match with his No. 1 singles victory over Slezak, 7-6 (8), 4-6, 10-4.

UC San Diego (0-2) continues play this weekend in Hawaii against Hawaii Pacific on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. PT.
