UC San Diego Men's Tennis Earns ITA Community Service Award

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of California San Diego men’s tennis team earned the International Tennis Association (ITA) Community Service Award, the association announced on Thursday.

National winners will be recognized on May 8, at the 2018 Division II NCAA Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz.

The Tritons have organized and contributed several community service events both on campus and within the San Diego community, including Empty Cradle, Row for the Cure, Martin Luther King Day of Service and Make-A-Wish fundraisers. In addition, UC San Diego participated in the programs Team-Up and IMPACT, which work with elementary school children to serve as role models and promote physical activity.

In the process, Triton senior Justin Zhang was named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar of the Year for men’s tennis by the publication Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. He was also one of three finalists and the first runner-up for the publication’s 2018 Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar of the Year.

UC San Diego finished the season with a 9-9 overall record and appearance in the NCAA West Regional before falling to Azusa Pacific. The Tritons won eight straight dual matches between Feb. 18 and March 14, and were ranked as high as 15th in the nation.
