Men's Tennis Named an ITA All-Academic Team, Three Honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of California San Diego men’s tennis team has been recognized as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team, while Sahm Irvine, Sreeganesh Manoharan, and Neil Tengbumroong were honored as ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athletes. The ITA announced the recipients on Thursday morning.

In order to qualify as an All-Academic Team, a squad must hold a cumulative team GPA of 3.20 or higher. The Tritons compiled a team GPA of 3.29. Individuals can garner All-Academic Scholar-Athlete status if they are varsity letter winners, have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the 2018-19 academic year, and have been enrolled at their institution for at least two semesters.

Human Biology major Manoharan and Computer Science major Tengbumroong have both received the ITA Scholar-Athlete accolade for two consecutive years. Irvine, who is majoring in Computer Engineering, is a first-time honoree as he just concluded his freshman season.

“I think they’ve chosen some difficult majors and it shows the type of scholar-athletes we have at UC San Diego,” said Head Coach Timmer Willing about Irvine, Manoharan, and Tengbumroong’s academic efforts. “They don’t shy away from challenges. It’s easy for me as a coach to come out and work with the type of scholar-athletes we have here.

“It’s funny because it’s almost an expectation from this team since I’ve been here,” said Willing about the Tritons’ All-Academic Team honor. “It’s almost not a surprise anymore. It’s not anything I push on them; it all comes from them. They make sure that they’re always on track.
