Tritons Conclude Action at ITA Regional Championship With Finals and Semifinals Appearances
AZUSA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s tennis team concluded action today at the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships, hosted by Azusa Pacific University from Oct. 3-5. View all of the regional’s results here.
Singles - Semifinals
Marc Isaia represented the Tritons in the final four, looking for an upset and a spot in the finals as he took on Jakob Schnaitter of host Azusa Pacific. It was top-seeded Schnaitter that came away with the win though, as Isaia ultimately fell 6-1, 6-2.
Doubles - Finals
After winning three doubles matches throughout the weekend following a first-round bye, Sreeganesh Manoharan and Zach Ermert were pitted against Jesse Haas and Leyton Bohren of Azusa Pacific in today’s finals.
It was a competitive match, but the Triton duo lost in the end with a final break of serve, 8-6.
"It was a very good start to the season," said Head Coach Timmer Willing. "Our two freshmen who were playing at SDSU competed well against Division I opponents, and our guys at ITA all got deep into singles draw while our doubles team beat some top players in Division II. When we start coming together as a team and taking initiative on our tasks and being self sufficient, we could have a very good season. If we develop a little grit and determination to all tasks, we make it to the NCAA Championships. If we don't, we go home early. Up to us."
This concludes the 2019 ITA Regional Championships. While part of the Triton team competed at the regionals, others took part in the Aztec Fall Invite, hosted by San Diego State. A recap will follow when results are made available.
UC San Diego continues its fall schedule on Nov. 7, when it competes at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships.
