UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO – Members of the University of California San Diego men’s tennis team took part in the San Diego State Fall Invite from Oct. 4-6.

Cody Duong and Fraser Leslie both saw their first action as Tritons at the invitational. After narrowly falling to their foes from host SDSU in the first round, 6-4, they bounced back with a 6-3 win over their Grand Canyon University opponents to advance to the consolation final. It was a hard-fought battle, but their opponents ultimately won, 7-6 (4).

After falling in the first round, 6-2, Zach Ermert and Marius Ruh were also seeking a spot in the consolation final. They fell to the eventual victors though, 6-1.

Leslie also competed in singles in the “State” flight. Despite falling in his first match, 6-2, 6-2, the freshman then outlasted his next foe, 6-1, 7-6 to move one step closer to the consolation final. Against his UC Irvine opponent, Leslie again emerged victorious, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Leslie’s run ultimately came to a close in the consolation final, as he was topped by his opponent, 6-4, 6-2.

Like Leslie, Ruh competed in the “State” flight. Ruh quickly claimed victory against his UC Irvine rival, 6-3, 6-1, but then fell to next opponent while seeking a spot in the quarterfinals.

Duong was the lone Triton in the “Aztec” flight. The junior transfer was pitted against a UCLA opponent in the first round, and captured the second set before ultimately falling, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1. Duong was later ousted by his next opponent, 6-3, 6-3.

Zach Ermert took part in the “Warrior” flight. It was a battle in his first set of the day, but after eventually dropping set one, Ermert was unable to overcome his opponent, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Ermert later dropped his second match of the afternoon to conclude singles play.
