LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The thirteenth-ranked University of California San Diego men’s water polo team opened a busy weekend on the road with a 15-2 loss to second-ranked University of Southern California, Thursday evening at Uytengsu Aquatic Center in Los Angeles.
UC San Diego fell to 3-7 on the season while USC improves to a perfect 10-0 overall record.
UCSD struggled to get things going offensively, surrendering the first eight goals before senior Arman Momdzhyan put the Tritons on the board late in the second quarter.
The Trojans’ McQuin Baron made nine saves in goal while the USC defense shutout UCSD in the first and third quarters.
The Tritons went 0-7 in powerplay opportunities and were outshout 36-24. Both teams collected seven exclusions.
Freshman Sam Gallo had UCSD’s second goal, scoring unassisted with 1:45 left in the final frame.
In goal, junior Sam Thompson made 13 saves and grabbed one steal.
This marks the second week in a row the Tritons have faced a top-five nationally ranked team. Last Saturday UCSD fell to No. 1 Cal by a score of 20-10.
UC San Diego will continue its busy weekend in Los Angeles as the Tritons compete the three-day Mountain Pacific Invitational Sept. 22-24. UCSD is set to play No. 5 Pacific tomorrow at 4 p.m. For the complete tournament schedule click here.
