LA JOLLA, Calif. - In front of a raucous crowd of 1,498 fans, the No. 13 University of California San Diego men’s water polo team defeated 19th-ranked Loyola Marymount by a score of 15-5 Wednesday evening at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
With the win, UC San Diego improved to 5-10 overall. The Lions dropped to 3-9 on the season.
Junior Kevin Asplund and senior Arman Momdzhyan each completed a hat trick, scoring three goals apiece. Sophomore Skyler Munatones dished out a game-high five assists while adding two goals and two steals.
“The guys showed up, we killed it, and everyone did their jobs,” said Asplund. "It’s always a fun environment to play in front of that many people. With that much support, it’s a good time. Thanks to everyone that came out, and go Tritons!"
UCSD held a 36-25 advantage in shots and went a perfect 4-for-4 on power plays.
The Tritons had no trouble getting off to a quick start, tallying five goals in the first quarter. Asplund scored twice in the frame, while Munatones had two assists.
Leading 5-2, Momdzhyan opened up the second quarter with a goal off a pass from junior Alessandro Valania. The Lions’ Matt Braun answered shortly after to make it a 6-3 game. Munatones converted a penalty shot and Valania found the back of the net with less than a minute remaining to give UCSD a five-goal lead heading into halftime.
