Tritons Have Seven Earn ACWPC All-Academic Accolades

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The University of California San Diego men’s water polo team had seven student-athletes earn Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic honors for the 2018 season, the association announced on Monday.

Senior Carson Ivancovich, junior Noah Carniglia, redshirt sophomore Calder Hilde-Jones, sophomore Brad Robison, sophomore Michael Gelnak, sophomore Sam Gallo and redshirt junior Jack Turner each earned all-academic recognition. 

UC San Diego had a team cumulative grade-point average of 3.009. The ACWPC placed a total of 395 student-athletes on All-Academic list and 26 teams were recognized.

Ivancovich (3.683), Hilde-Jones (3.493), Carniglia (3.447) and Robison (3.416) each landed on the Superior List for a grade-point average between 3.41 and 3.70, while Gelnak (3.268), Gallo (3.203) and Turner (3.247) all made the Excellent List for GPAs between 3.20 and 3.40.

It’s the third time Ivancovich, Carniglia and Turner have earned ACWPC All-Academic accolades, and the second time for Robison, Gelnak and Hilde-Jones. Ivancovich, Carniglia and Robison each made the Superior List for the second-straight season.

Hilde-Jones, Gelnak and Turner were all on the Excellent List last season. It is Gallo’s first ACWPC All-Academic distinction.

In addition to the Superior and Excellent Lists, there is also an Outstanding List for GPAs ranging from 3.71 to 4.0. 

UC San Diego finished the 2018 season 20-6 and ranked No. 5 in the final Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 20 Poll. The Tritons won their 19th Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) championship en route to advancing to the Collegiate Water Polo Championship Semifinals against No. 1-ranked Stanford.

In the process, UC San Diego won 20 games for the first time since 2008, while its .769 winning percentage was the second-best all-time.
