Matt Ustaszewski Spends Summer With USA Men's National Team Coaching Staff
GWANGJU, South Korea — University of California San Diego men’s water polo associate head coach Matt Ustaszewski has been traveling the world this summer working as video coordinator with the United States Men’s National Team coaching staff .
Ustaszewski was with the team at the China Wenjiang International Water Polo Tournament in Chengdu, China, and is currently at the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. He serves as the team’s performance analyst, filming all trainings and competitions, as well as assisting with video breakdown.
Team USA won the gold medal and posted a 3-1 record in China, capped off with a victory over Montenegro in the final, 8-4. The China Wenjiang International Water Polo Tournament, which was preparation for the FINA World Championships, also included wins over China and Canada.
Team USA opened play at the FINA World Championships on July 15 with an emphatic victory over Kazakhstan, 16-7, before falling to defending gold medalist Croatia on July 16, 17-7. The United States closes group play against Australia on Friday, July 19, beginning at 3:10 a.m. PT.
Entering his seventh season as UC San Diego associate head coach and 10th overall on the Tritons' coaching staff, Ustaszewski has also been head coach for the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program’s Pacific Southwest Zone since 2011. He was a standout player for UC San Diego and a team captain as a senior in 2003.
Ustaszewski is one of three Tritons representing United States water polo this summer, as redshirt senior center Kacper Langiewicz and redshirt senior goalkeeper Jack Turner were both members of the Team USA roster for the World University Games. Team USA won silver medal in the event, highlighted by victories over Croatia and Hungary.
