Tritons Selected to Finish First in WWPA Preseason Coaches Poll
OAKLAND, Calif – The University of California San Diego men’s water polo team was selected to finish first in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Preseason Coaches Poll as selected by the league’s coaches.
The Tritons earned 49 points and received seven first place votes. UC Davis, last season’s runner up in the WWPA tournament, earned the other first place vote.
UC San Diego is coming off one of its best seasons in school history. The Tritons won the WWPA Tournament and regular-season championships last season, en route to an appearance in the National Collegiate Water Polo (NCWP) Semifinals and a No. 5 final ranking in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 20. It was the program's 19th WWPA championship.
Head Coach Denny Harper enters his 40thseason at the helm for the Tritons. Harper boasts 643 career wins, is a 19-time WWPA Coach of the Year and a 16-time ACWPC National Coach of the Year.
The Tritons return a bevy of talent, including Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Division II All-America Player of the Year Jack Turner. In addition to Turner, UC San Diego returns All-Americans Skyler Munatones and Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt.
Men’s water polo opens up the season hosting the Triton Invitational at the Canyonview Aquatic Center from September 7-8. The annual tournament will feature 14 teams including several top ranked teams from California.
