Men's Water Polo Opens Up Season Hosting Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif – The University of California, San Diego men’s water polo team opens up the season hosting the Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center from September 7-8.



Fourteen teams throughout the state of California will partake in the two-day tournament. The Triton Invitational will feature many of the top teams in the country with nine of the teams in the tournament ranked in the top 20 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) preseason poll. UC San Diego will play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and UC Irvine at 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM respectively on Saturday with its opponents for Sunday to be determined based on the results of Saturday.



Tickets will be sold one hour prior to the start of the tournament at the Canyonview Aquatic Center. Admission is free for all UC San Diego students with valid I.D. General admission is $15 per day. Seniors (65+), youth (4-17), alumni, staff and faculty can purchase discounted tickets for $10. Parking is free on the weekend.



UC San Diego completed one of its best seasons in school history. The Tritons won their 19th Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship,finished the season 20-6 and won 20 games for the first time since 2008. UC San Diego finished the season ranked fifth nationally in the final CWPA Top 20 poll after an appearance in the National Collegiate Water Polo Championship Semifinals.



Jack Turner, Skylar Munatones and Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt all return after earning Division II All-American status in 2018. Turner was named the 2018 Player of the Year. The three Tritons, who were also named to the 2018 All-WWPA First Team, are joined by 2018 WWPA All-Freshmen Teamer Konstantin Karlov. The Tritons will bolster the roster with 12 newcomers: nine freshmen and three transfers.



This past summer, Turner represented the United States at the 2019 World Games in Naples, Italy. The duo led Team USA to a Silver medal finish and its best finish in the World Games since 1993.



The Tritons were selected to repeat as WWPA champions in the preseason coaches’ poll. UC San Diego was ranked ninth in the CWPA preseason poll. Also featured in the CWPA preseason poll from the WWPA are UC Davis (10th), Loyola Marymount (12th) and Cal Baptist (T-16th).



Head Coach Denny Harper enters his 40thseason leading the Tritons. Over his career, Harper has amassed a record of 643-478-4, has been named the WWPA Coach of the Year 19 times and ACWPC Coach of the Year 16 times. This year’s WWPA Championship Tournament will take place in Harper’s hometown of Riverside.

The Tritons will play Concordia University Irvine on September 13 at 1:30 PM for their first WWPA game of the season.
