Men's Water Polo Dominates Concordia Irvine in Win
IRVINE, Calif. – The University of California San Diego No. T-9 ranked men’s water polo team’s offensive firepower was on full display as the Tritons handled Concordia Irvine 20-8 in their first Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) win of the season. The Tritons improve to 3-2 overall while the Eagles fall to 1-4.
The Tritons are now 2-0 against WWPA opponents for the season. UC San Diego defeated last year’s WWPA runner-up UC Davis last weekend at the Triton Invitational in a non-conference game.
The offense scored 20 points for the first time this season and first time since Sept 28, 2018 when the Tritons defeated Air Force 20-12. Ten different Tritons scored in the contest while 13 recorded a point.
The Tritons played excellent man-down defense and held the Eagles to 1-for-11 on power plays. UC San Diego tallied 11 steals compared to Concordia Irvine’s six.
UC San Diego opened up the game with a 6-0 run which saw goals from five different players. A goal from Meesan Moore with seconds left in the quarter finally put Concordia on the board. The offense cooled off in the second quarter and only mustered two goals. But the defense stood tall and held the Eagles to a single goal.
The Tritons went on 4-1 run to start the third quarter. Both teams would trade goals the rest of the way with Karlo Krmek scoring in the final seconds of the third frame to put the Tritons up 13-5. UC San Diego would go on to score seven goals in the final quarter to put the game out of reach for the Eagles.
UC San Diego will compete in the Princeton Invitational this weekend Sept. 13-14.
