No. 17 Cal State San Bernardino wins Rematch and Reis Cup
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Battling in the third annual Reis Cup Tuesday, the UC San Diego women's volleyball team fell in four sets against 17th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino in front of 1,102 fans at RIMAC Arena. Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match were 28-26, 20-25, 26-24 and 25-17.
With the loss, UCSD fell to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA. CSUSB improved to 9-2 and 2-1. It was the second meeting in a week's time between the two squads as the Tritons defeated the Coyotes, 3-0, in San Bernardino on Sept. 15.
UC San Diego suffered its first Reis Cup loss after winning in 2013 and 2014. The event is named in honor of former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis.
Cal State San Bernardino out-blocked UCSD 11-4 and held a .253 (57-17-158) to .142 (57-33-169) advantage in hitting percentage.
The Tritons, who aced the Coyotes eight times, were led by middle blocker Kameron Cooper's 15.5 points. The senior had 14 kills, six digs and two blocks. Meagan Wright (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) was just behind with 15.0 points on 15 kills. Wright completed her fifth double-double of the season by adding a match-high 19 digs. Setter Heidi Sierks also had a double-double with 42 assists and 12 digs. Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) put down a career-best four aces.
CSUSB's Brenna McIntosh was tabbed the Reis Cup MVP after finishing with 19.0 points on 15 kills and six blocks (two solo). Malika O'Brien had 16 kills, five blocks and hit .481, while Alexandra Torline had 15 kills and Ashley Solis totaled 16 digs.
Tuesday's match was the home opener for UC San Diego. The crowd was the fifth-largest to watch a women's volleyball match at RIMAC Arena and the biggest since the 2004 season.
UCSD hosts another tough opponent Friday as No. 25 Cal State L.A. (10-1, 3-0) visits La Jolla. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
