Release: Saturday 09/23/2017

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team earned its second sweep in as many nights Saturday with a 3-0 blanking of league rival Chico State at RIMAC Arena. Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match went 25-14, 25-22, and 25-18.

UC San Diego, which swept Stanislaus State Friday and has now won three straight, improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the CCAA. Chico dropped to an even 7-7 and is 1-3 in the conference.

Jessica Rieble was potent offensively for the Tritons, finishing with 12 kills, eight blocks (two solos), and 17 points to lead all players. The sophomore middle blocker hit an impressive .706 with only two errors in 17 attack attempts.

Senior outside hitter Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) totaled 12.5 points - which included nine kills, two service aces, and three block assists - while adding a match-best 14 digs. Junior middle Micah Hammond also had nine kills and hit .353, while sophomore libero Allyson Penrose had 13 digs.

UCSD totaled 10 blocks, the sixth time this season that the team has hit double digits in that category. The Tritons sided-out at 69 percent for the match, which included an 80 percent rate in the first set. They also had a 51-44 advantage in digs and hit .259 (41-13-108) to Chico State's .090 (36-25-122).

Makaela Keeve and Mckenna LaForge each had 10 kills for the Wildcats and Tristen Thompson had 12 digs.

The opening set was tied early at 1-1 before UCSD used a four-point run to go ahead for good. The Tritons gained their largest lead of the set when a Rieble block closed out a 7-1 run and put them up by 12 at 20-8.

The second set was tight the whole way through. With the Wildcats ahead by a 9-8 count, the Tritons mounted a 6-1 run to lead 14-10. Hammond was instrumental during the surge, providing two kills and a block. UCSD would not trail again, but Chico tied it three times, the last coming at 22-22. The Tritons rallied to score three unanswered points - with Rieble providing a kill and a block for two of those - to win the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the final frame, UC San Diego hit .405 with 17 kills and just two errors in 37 swings. Tied 2-2, the Tritons won the next four points and never looked back. Consecutive kills by junior outside Molly Dalziel gave UCSD a 21-15 lead and Chico State got no closer than five points the rest of the way. Rieble had five kills and three blocks in the set, including the final kill of the night to complete the sweep for UCSD.

Saturday's contest concluded a three-match homestand for UC San Diego. The Tritons now take to the road, playing at 22nd-ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 29 and at Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 30.
