SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - A tough night offensively led to the first conference loss for the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team as it was swept by Cal State San Bernardino, the 24th-ranked squad in the country, Friday at Coussoulis Arena. Scores were 25-16, 25-14, and 25-21.
With its three-match win streak halted, UC San Diego fell to 9-3 on the season and 3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal State San Bernardino, which won its third-straight contest, improved to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in conference contests.
The Tritons mustered just an .057 attack percentage with 25 kills and 19 errors in 106 attempts. It was their lowest offensive output in terms of attack percentage since Sept. 1 when they hit -.010 against Azusa Pacific. They also totaled 25 kills in that loss, the fewest in a single match this season.
On the other side of the net, the Coyotes hit a solid .359 with 50 kills, twice as many as UCSD, to go along with just 13 errors in 103 swings. They also held a 46-36 advantage in digs and an 8.0 to 4.0 edge in blocks. CSUSB sided-out at 67 percent, while UCSD finished at 46 percent.
"The effort was there, but we were out-played in every phase of the game," said UC San Diego head coach Ricci Luyties. "We struggled to get kills and didn't have any rhythm offensively. Our blocking has been a big part of our success so far this season, and that wasn't much of a factor tonight."
Senior outside hitter Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) led UC San Diego with 10 kills while also adding nine digs. Junior middle blocker Micah Hammond hit .385 (7-2-13) and sophomore libero Alyson Penrose had 11 digs. Leilia To'omalatai led all players with 12 digs.
San Bernardino's outsides were red-hot as both Moira Murphy and Lauren Nicholson put down 17 kills apiece. Murphy hit .538 and Nicholson swung at .500 for the match.
The Coyotes led the whole way in the opening set after jumping out to a 6-1 lead. A late four-point run put them up 24-15.
UCSD won the first point of the second set, but Cal State San Bernardino took the next three to go ahead for good. At 21-14, the Coyotes reeled off four unanswered points to earn a 2-0 lead in the match.
The final set featured eight tie scores and three lead changes. Trailing 4-3, the Tritons compiled a six-point run and led 9-4 when it was over. However, the Coyotes answered right back with their own six-point run to go up 10-9. UCSD tied it three times, the last coming at 16-16, but never re-gained a lead. At 23-21, Nicholson and Murphy produced back-to-back kills to complete the sweep for CSUSB.
UC San Diego plays at CCAA opponent Cal Poly Pomona (6-7, 2-3) Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Broncos dropped a five-set decision to Cal State San Marcos Friday night at Kellogg Gym.
