UC San Diego Gets 10th W of Season with Hard-Earned Sweep at Cal Poly Pomona
Release: Saturday 09/30/2017
by UCSD

POMONA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team picked up its 10th win of the season Saturday night with a hard-earned sweep over league opponent Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Gym. Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match went 31-29, 25-14, and 26-24.

UC San Diego improved to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA, while Cal Poly Pomona dropped to 6-8 and 2-4.

"This match showed me that this team is becoming more and more resilient," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "After a tough loss last night (3-0 at Cal State San Bernardino), we stayed mentally strong even when we were playing poorly at the start of the match. We've been making plays in tight games to pull of wins in pressure situations, and that's a good sign."

UCSD hit .206 (41-15-126) and held CPP to an .086 (43-30-151) attack percentage. As has been the case for most of the season, the Tritons were strong at the net, totaling nine team blocks. For the second-straight night, UCSD had 10 more digs than its opponent, holding a 67-57 advantage against the Broncos.

For the Tritons, Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) recorded her team-leading ninth double-double of the year, collecting 11 kills to go along with a match-high 25 digs. Micah Hammond had an outstanding night offensively with 10 kills and a .409 (10-1-22) attack percentage. Jessica Rieble totaled six blocks (one solo) and setter Marie Paris had five. Paris finished with 31 assists.

In the marathon first set, both squads posted their highest attack percentage of the match, with UCSD coming in at .234 (16-5-47) and Cal Poly Pomona swinging .150 (20-11-60). The Broncos led for a good portion of the set after getting out to a 7-2 advantage. In fact, CPP led all the way until it had set point at 24-21 following an attack error by the Tritons. However, UC San Diego scored three unanswered points - two of those coming off of blocks that involved Rieble - to tie it at 24-24 and send the set into extra points. At 29-29, two Bronco errors - one from the service line and another on the attack - allowed the Tritons to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Colla had six kills, seven digs, and a block in the set.

The last time UCSD scored more points in a single set was way back on Aug. 29, 2009, when it battled for a 32-30 win in the second frame against Minnesota Duluth. Tonight's 60 total points were the most in a set involving the Tritons since Nov. 4, 2016, when Chico State won set two, 32-30.

The second set was competitive until its midpoint. A block by Cal Poly Pomona gave the Broncos their 14th point of the stanza and they would get no more. With a 17-14 lead, UC San Diego scored eight straight points to win the set and go up 2-0 in the match. Six of the Triton points during the run were won on attack errors by the Broncos, with Hammond getting two blocks in the process.

Cal Poly Pomona came out firing in the third set and took an 8-3 lead. Later down 14-9, UCSD evened it up with five consecutive points. The Tritons used another five-point run to get to match point at 24-21. However, the Broncos scored three straight points to tie it at 24-24. Jessyca Beksa put down a kill to move UC San Diego back to match point and an attack error by CPP ended the contest.

Overall, the third set had nine tie scores and three lead changes.

The Broncos got 13 kills from Alexandra Gresham and 22 digs from Alexandria Bollier.

UC San Diego hosts Cal State LA on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. UC San Diego students are admitted FREE to all regular season home matches at RIMAC Arena.
