Tritons Come From Behind in Four-Set Win at San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO - Jessica Rieble totaled a match-high 17.5 points to help the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team come back from a set down and earn a 3-1 road victory at conference foe San Francisco State Saturday night. Scores from Main Gym were 22-25, 25-22, 25-13, and 25-17.

UC San Diego upped its records to 15-5 overall and 9-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Tritons are tied with Cal State San Bernardino for first place in the league's South Division. SF State dropped to 7-13 and 3-9. UCSD was coming off a four-set loss at league-leading Sonoma State Friday, while SF State swept Cal State San Marcos last night.

Rieble, a middle blocker, had 13 kills and nine block assists on the night. She hit .391 with four errors in 23 attack attempts. Fellow middle Micah Hammond was also solid on the attack, hitting .471 with nine kills and just a single error in 17 swings.

On the outside, Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) amassed 16.5 points on 11 kills, three service aces, and four blocks (one solo). She added a match-best 18 digs to log her 16th double-double of the year. Outside hitter Jessyca Beksa attacked at .350 (8-1-20), while libero Alyson Penrose had 15 digs and three aces.

As a team, UC San Diego had a season-high 13 blocks to go along with nine aces from the service line. The Tritons posted a .234 (49-17-137) attack percentage and held SF State to .137 (49-29-146).

"We lost the first set, but stayed mentally strong and got better as the match went on," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "It was a big win for us."

UCSD got out to an 8-3 lead in the opening set, but SF State reeled off five unanswered points to tie it up. The Gators took their first lead when an Abby Griffith block made it 11-10 and they stayed ahead the rest of the way. The Tritons were within two points late at 24-22, but a Drew Morris kill gave SFSU a 1-0 lead in the match.

With set two tied at 8-8, UC San Diego took a 12-9 lead with a 4-1 run that featured a pair of double blocks by Hammond and Rebecca Seaberry. However, SF State got back in it and kept it close. With the score 21-20 in favor of the Tritons, a Gator service error and a kill by Rieble gave UCSD a two-point cushion, 23-20. The teams then traded the next four points with Beksa getting the final say with a kill that tied the match at 1-1.

The third set was all Tritons as they blasted out to a 12-3 lead and established a fervid momentum that San Francisco State could not quash. Ahead by a 15-11 count, UC San Diego finished out the set with a 10-2 scoring advantage to go up 2-1 in the match.

The Tritons carried that momentum into the fourth frame, scoring the set's first four points and staying ahead for the rest of the night. With UCSD later leading 8-4, SF State would not close the gap any closer than that four points. At match point, the Tritons led by nine, 24-15. The Gators staved off two of those match points, but Beksa floored a kill that completed the comeback victory for UC San Diego.

SF State was led by Morris, who finished with 16 points, 13 kills, 14 digs, two aces, and two block assists. Christine Johnson had 15 kills and Jocelyn Rodriguez totaled 17 digs.

UC San Diego plays its final regular season home matches next week, hosting CCAA opponents Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Oct. 27, and Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Oct. 28. Senior Night takes place Saturday with Colla, Rachel Linden, and Seaberry being honored before the match. Both contests are slated to start at 7 p.m. at RIMAC Arena. UCSD students are admitted free.
