UC San Diego Swept at Cal State San Marcos
SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team was defeated in straight sets by Cal State San Marcos in a cross-county showdown Saturday evening at The Sports Center. Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match went 25-21, 25-23, and 25-18.
With its second-straight loss, UC San Diego fell to 16-7 overall. Cal State San Marcos, which won its fourth-consecutive contest, improved to 14-9. The two teams entered the match with identical CCAA records. The Tritons dropped to 10-5, while the Cougars went to 11-4 in league action.
UCSD hit a lackluster .125 (39-22-136), its fourth-lowest attack percentage of the season. For just the ninth time in 23 matches, the Tritons were out-blocked as the Cougars held a 10.5-7.0 advantage at the net. CSUSM also won the side out battle at 62 percent to 52 percent.
"We gave up some runs of points that cost us the first two sets," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "We were playing fine, but got stuck in some rotations that gave them all the momentum. We played hard, but San Marcos came up with the big plays to make those runs at the end of the sets to put it away."
Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) led all players with 17 kills and 20 points for the Tritons. Micah Hammond had seven kills and four blocks, while freshman setter Mary Bagshaw posted her third career double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs. Alyson Penrose totaled a match co-high 16 digs.
Cal State San Marcos hit .192 (42-18-125) on the night. Three players had nine kills apiece including Faith Fortune, Lauren Lee, and Maddy Newcombe. Grecia Cordero-Barr had 16 digs and three service aces.
UCSD got out to a 6-2 lead in the opening set and stayed in front until a four-point run by CSUSM tied it at 13-13. With the Tritons up 19-18, the Cougars scored three-straight points and seven of the final nine to take a 1-0 lead in the match. They closed it out on another three-point run that included a pair of aces by Cordero-Barr.
In the second set, UC San Diego again led early and was up by six at 14-8 when Jessyca Beksa dropped in a service ace. However, Cal State San Marcos rallied once again, scoring eight of the next nine points to lead 16-15. Tied at 20-20, the Cougars scored four-straight times to get to set point. The Tritons showed resilience by winning the next three points, two of those coming on kills by Colla, but a Newcombe kill ended the set and put CSUSM up 2-0.
The third set was all Cougars as they stormed out to a 7-1 lead and never trailed. The Tritons got back to within four points at 20-16 following back-to-back kills by Hammond and Colla, but they could close the gap no further. CSUSM hit a match-best .308 in the stanza.
It was the first-ever win for Cal State San Marcos in the all-time series as UC San Diego came out on top in the previous four meetings, including a 3-1 victory in La Jolla on Sept. 16 of this season.
UC San Diego concludes its regular season on the road next week, playing at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Nov. 10 and at Cal State LA on Nov. 11.
