Tritons Get it Done with Sweep of Cal State San Marcos

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Playing in its biggest match of the season Saturday, the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team rose to the occasion and swept cross-county rival Cal State San Marcos to keep its postseason hopes alive.

Scores of the Senior Night match at RIMAC Arena were 25-19, 25-15, and 25-21. With its third consecutive win, UC San Diego improved to 10-11 overall and 6-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal State San Marcos fell to 11-12 and 7-8.

The Tritons entered the contest in fifth place in the conference, two matches behind the fourth-place Cougars. A loss would have eliminated UC San Diego from postseason play and given the fourth and final CCAA South Division's league tournament berth to Cal State San Marcos.

Middle blocker Jessica Rieble led all players with 16 points after recording 12 kills and five blocks (three solos). She was absolutely on fire, finishing with a scorching .706 hitting percentage after committing zero errors in 17 attempts. It matched her career-high and was the best attack by any Triton this season.

Just behind Rieble in point production was outside hitter Gina Cortesi, who totaled 15 on 14 kills and a service ace. She also added nine digs.

Right side hitter Cindy Tran had six kills, three aces, and five block assists for 11.5 points. Defensively, she racked up 14 digs.

Middle Allison Tiegs had five blocks, libero Susanna Limb posted 17 digs, and setter Maria Mayhew tallied 33 assists, five digs, three kills, two aces, and two blocks.

As a team, UC San Diego hit .327 (43-10-101), its second-highest attack percentage of the year. The Tritons had 10 blocks, marking the 11th time this season they have finished in double-digits.

The Cougars got 11 points from Taylor Dixon, who had nine kills and a pair of aces. Haley Montgomery amassed 17 digs. Cal State San Marcos hit .130 (33-19-108).

It was the final career home match for Triton seniors Molly Dalziel, Kayla Evans (San Diego/Del Norte HS), Micah Hammond, Morgan Kissick, and Tiegs.

UC San Diego completes its regular season on the road next week, playing at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Nov. 2 and at Cal State LA on Nov. 3. Cal State San Marcos has the same two opponents remaining on its schedule.
