Tritons Get Fourth-Straight Win, 3-1 at Dominguez Hills
CARSON, Calif. - Jessica Rieble and Cindy Tran each totaled 16 points as the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-1, Friday evening at the Torodome.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-18, 19-25, and 25-19.
It was the fourth-straight victory for UC San Diego, which improved to 11-11 overall and 7-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Tritons were playing their second-consecutive must-win match in order to stay in the hunt for a conference tournament spot.
Rieble finished her night with 12 kills and seven blocks (one solo) while hitting .364 (12-4-22) from the middle. Nationally, she ranks 16th in hitting percentage and 19th in blocks per set.
Tran, a right-side hitter, racked up 11 kills, a match-high 17 digs, six blocks, two service aces, and two assists.
Outside hitter Gina Cortesi also had a strong showing with 14 kills, 11 digs, and a block assist. It was her team-leading 12th double-double of the season.
Freshman setter Maria Mayhew assisted on 38 kills.
The Tritons hit .208 and had a 54-37 advantage in kills. They produced 10 blocks, the 12th time they have finished with a double-digit total.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, which fell to 9-12 on the season and 4-12 in the conference, attacked at just .067. Tati Yandall had 14 kills and Esther Duru was just behind with 12.
UC San Diego swept CSUDH in La Jolla on Oct. 2.
The Tritons entered the match one win behind Cal State San Marcos for the fourth and final South Division berth in next week's eight-team CCAA Tournament. San Marcos defeated No. 12 Cal State LA, 3-1, Friday night in Los Angeles, meaning that the Tritons need to win Saturday at Cal State LA and the Cougars need to lose at Cal State Dominguez Hills for UC San Diego to get into the postseason.
Cal State LA edged UC San Diego in five sets on Oct. 2 at RIMAC Arena.
