Longtime Triton Volleyball Coach Doug Dannevik to be Inducted into AVCA Hall of Fame
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Doug Dannevik, the winningest coach in UC San Diego women's volleyball history, will be inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in 2019.
As head coach of the Tritons from 1979 through 1995, Dannevik posted a 448-199 record, good for a .692 win percentage. The team won six NCAA Division III National Championships, including the institution's first in any sport in 1981. He also led UC San Diego to four national runner-up finishes as the Tritons qualified for NCAA postseason play in every year they were eligible under Dannevik.
A two-time Volleyball Monthly Coach of the Year and four-time West Region Coach of the Year, Dannevik's squads collected at least 20 wins in 14 of his 17 seasons and had 30 or more victories five times. In 1986 the Tritons set a program record with 42 wins.
Dannevik coached six National Players of the Year and 31 All-Americans while at UC San Diego.
In 1981 Dannevik was part of the first group of coaches that made up the Collegiate Volleyball Coaches Association (CVCA) and he played an instrumental role in ensuring Division III had a seat at the table in the national coaching landscape. In 1986, the CVCA was re-branded as the AVCA.
Dannevik, who also coached the Tritons' men's volleyball team for three seasons, was a member of the inaugural class inducted into the UC San Diego Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.
Dannevik joins Laurie Corbelli, Joel Dearing, and Jodi Manore as members of the 17th class to be inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame. The foursome, which will be formally inducted during the AVCA Convention in December, will bring the total of AVCA Hall of Famers to 84.
